The program focuses on four key areas:
Self-Awareness
Participants explore personal values, emotions, and relationship goals while building confidence and emotional understanding.
Healthy Relationships
Youth learn how to recognize healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors, manage conflict respectfully, and navigate breakups safely.
Communication and Decision-Making
Lessons emphasize consent, boundary setting, identifying red flags, and making thoughtful relationship choices that reduce risk.
Future Planning
Participants explore the “Success Sequence,” encouraging education, career development, and long-term planning before starting a family.
Research shows that Love Notes participants demonstrate improved communication skills, stronger relationship awareness, and healthier decision-making. Studies also indicate a 46% reduction in pregnancy rates among participants, along with increased use of protective behaviors.
The Dot Lake Village Council has adapted the Love Notes curriculum to reflect Native cultural values and traditional knowledge. By blending evidence-based education with cultural teachings, the program supports Native youth in ways that are relevant, respectful, and community-centered.
Love Notes has been successfully delivered through:
- Dot Lake School programming.
- Tribal Saturday youth events at the Community Hall.
- Dot Lake Village’s annual Summer Culture Camp.
